Updated on July 9, 2011

Sydney’s Best Flea Markets

Sydney has many flea markets – some are undercover, others in church grounds and yet others are located on a shady suburban street corner.

As with flea markets around the world, the Sydney flea markets have a unique character. If you're visiting Sydney and want to take home some souvenirs, then visiting flea markets could be just what you need. Markets like Paddington display gorgeous works by artisans. Even if you're not buying, it's a treat to sit and watch people.

To find one that suits you here are some of Sydney’s best flea markets along with a map and information on when its the best time to visit them:

The delicious smells emanating from the food section will tempt you, so be sure to leave room for a snack on the run.

Paddy’s Market

Right in the city, Paddy’s flea market is cheap and (pick through the over 1000 stalls to find the) chic.

Paddy’s flea market is undercover and bustles with activity. Clothing, souvenirs, tableware and more. This is the place to look for a bag or suitcase and to stock up on fabulously fresh Australian fruit and vegetables.

Escape the crowds and go upstairs for more civilized outlet shopping.

Location: Cnr Hay and Thomas Streets, Haymarket. It’s just off George Street and is in Chinatown.

Visit: Thu-Sun 9a.m. – 5p.m.

Getting there: Walk – it’s in the city!

Glebe

Visiting this wonderful flea market is like wandering through a maze with stalls to tempt left and right. Located in the delightful Australian suburb of Glebe, this flea market has designer tee shirts, clothing, creative handbags, jewelry and more.

It is definitely worth a visit and it is close to the city. Afterwards, stop awhile for breakfast or lunch at any one of the interesting cafes in the neighborhood. Excellent coffee is to be had in this suburb.

Location: Cnr Glebe Point Road and Derby Place, Glebe

Visit: Saturday 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Getting there: Bus from the city

The Rocks

Sydney’s historic Rock’s area is a “must see” on any tourists itinerary. This area has certainly spruced up since its squalid beginnings as one of the first European settlements. Restored old cottages and sandstone buildings give a glimpse of Sydney of a bygone era.

Tasteful creative product, opals and outstanding souvenirs are offered in the Rocks area which is close to the approaches to the Sydney Harbor Bridge. This flea market is spread over a few streets, so take time to wander. In the main this offers classy product.

Location: George Street, the Rocks

Visit: Saturday and Sunday 10a.m. – 5 p.m.

Getting there: An easy walk from most accommodation in the city

Rozelle

An eclectic mix of mainly old and (limited) new makes this suburban flea market of 100 stalls extremely appealing. Collectable goods, used books, art, craft and general bric a brac is displayed under leafy green trees.

Location: Corner Darling and Victoria Street, Rozelle

Visit: 9a.m. – 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday

Getting there: Bus from the city over the stunning Anzac Bridge

The Rozelle flea market is just up the road from Balmain, so consider combining it with a trip to this quaint, vibrant area of Sydney.

Visiting flea markets gives the tourist tantalizing options. Whether you like to browse, hunt for unique souvenirs or simply want to add to your wardrobe this list has something to suit every flea market shopper.
